The Intelligent Optics Laboratory (IOL) team specializes in the investigation of new research opportunities and provides unique expertise in the burgeoning area of controllable optical systems.
The key research emphasis includes wavefront control principles, techniques and applications. These are equally important for laser technology, optical imaging, fiber and free-space optical communications, microscopy, astronomy and a number of other industrial, medical and military applications.
The IOL has broad, demonstrated experience in adaptive optics. Dr. Mikhail Vorontsov, the IOL director and an expert in active imaging and laser communications, leads a team of learned faculty, research scientists and students.
Dr. Vorontsov holds a joint appointment as a research professor with the A. James Clark School of Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research (ISR). Dr. Vorontsov is also a Distinguished Research Fellow with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL).
The IOL is a spin-off laboratory from the ARL. The IOL is a constituent of the ISR and affiliated with the Center for Satellite and Hybrid Communication Networks.
